Governor declares October as Toastmasters Month in Iowa

Thank you to our fellow Toastmasters who were able to visit the Iowa Capitol to witness the signing of the Governor’s Proclamation on October 4th announcing the news.

Crosswinds Toastmasters - Radio Interview on Oct. 15!




Marshalltown's KFJB Radio is looking to conduct a short phone interview with Toastmasters Crosswinds!

The interview will take place on Monday, October 15th at 6:40am

Topics to include information about our organization, how to join, etc..

To better accommodate the non-Emerson employees, we have decided to move our club location from inside the Emerson Innovation Center Conference Center to a more central location in the heart of downtown Marshalltown.

August 18th TLI and BBQ After-Party!

Hi all!


The Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) for Area 24 is coming to the Ames Public Library Auditorium on Saturday, August 18th 9:30am-12:30pm. 

The TLI is open to any Area 24 Club Members and not limited to Officers. Attending TLI's is a great opportunity to network with other Clubs, stay up to date with upcoming Area and District level events, and keeping your general Toastmaster skills sharp!


But after....

Our very own Melissa Niesen, Club Treasurer, would like to invite any (and all?) Crosswinds Club members for a BBQ Lunch following the TLI Training!

Pathways - How to Get Started!! (BEGIN NOW)

Hi all!

Pathways is upon us, and thanks to our Club Treasurer, Melissa Niesen, we've developed a really good way to help us all get started. 

This is a pretty straightforward walkthrough on enrolling into the Pathways Education Program for the first time. All it takes is 10-15 minutes!

Steps:

To get to Pathways, it might look different, depending on screen size:

2. You’ll see an option to choose your path, which will ask you ~15 questions and recommend three paths. Pick the one that sounds the best, or if you want to see the nitty-gritty details of all the paths, you can see the full program at many places on the web. 


3. This is a good reference on all of the paths and projects: http://d4tm.org/pathways/paths-and-projects.html 
It can help provide a better understanding of how the Paths are constructed. (NOT necessary if you just want to get going!)


4. After you have selected your path, you will receive an email confirmation. This may or may not take a while (an hour or two) to actually have access to the Path. When you do get access, it will look like this, with the middle box being the way to access the Path:



5. Then at the bottom of the page (you’re in Base Camp right now), you can access your Path curriculum:

  • You have two years to finish your existing manuals, so no rush if you like those. 
  • You can also work through your manuals side-by-side with Pathways. 
  • One big change will be remembering to print out the evaluation form ahead of time. (We’ll have to figure out exactly who will be responsible for these print-outs.)



When you start Pathways, share your experience with the rest of the club. Ask questions, etc. 

This is new and a change, but we can figure it out together!

Pathways is here!

Greetings Fellow Toastmasters!

An exciting new learning experience is on its way. Toastmasters PATHWAYS!

As some of you are already aware from the recent training received a few weeks ago, Pathways is a new and interactive structure to Toastmasters that aims to improve on the already familiar structure of our Toastmasters club.

We will begin transitioning into the Pathways program over the next several weeks.

In the meantime, please review the Pathways Website and spend some time this week exploring and navigating the website. To get started, I recommend scrolling to the bottom of the page and viewing the five videos on "How Pathways began".



Let me know if you have not already received the three-step process to prepare us in enrolling into the program!

Raffle Basket Reminder!

Hey Crosswinds,

The deadline for raffle basket donation is tomorrowTuesday (4/24).  This is our club's contribution to the District 19 Spring Conference fundraising effort and I’d like for each of us to be represented.  

We’ve chosen a "Coffee Lovers" theme for our basket this year.  Anything coffee-themed or cash.  




We’re recommending a $10-15 value range per member!

Iowa Academic Decathlon Volunteering Opportunity!


Calling All Volunteer Judges!

This year's Iowa Academic Decathlon state championship will be held at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, on Friday, March 2nd and Saturday, March 3rd. 

The competition is composed of 10 events, including a speech competition, which takes place on the evening of March 2. 

Event coordinator, Kim Olson, needs help lining up judges for this competition.  Fort Dodge does not have a high school which currently competes in Academic Decathlon, which should help ensure neutrality from local judges. 

Toastmasters are being reached out to because we have more experience than most the judges have with listening to speeches, the more they will bring to giving the students a fair and critical hearing!  

This is a volunteer opportunity, which will run from around 4:00 until about 9:00 p.m.  Judges will be given a brief orientation, during which an Academic Decathlon board member will explain the rubric used for evaluating speeches, and the general philosophy.  A break, with dinner included, will be provided for every judge.

Each team has up to 9 members, who will compete at the same time in
separate rooms.  Three judges in each room.
